Masud’s new book

This book shows how modern neuroscience is helping us to understand how the brain creates our identities – our selves. Through the stories of seven remarkable people, we get to discover how our identities are the result of different brain functions. And how personal and social identities can be transformed by disorders of the brain, such as stroke or dementia. We also find out how new treatments can help to restore aspects of brain function and, in some cases, a person’s sense of self and their connections with other people.

An ‘emotionally powerful book [that] delves deeply into the nature of individual human identity and how this relates to our belonging.’ - Financial Times

‘Riveting case studies reveal how neurology shapes who we are. A terrifying but fascinating book.’ - New Scientist

‘More than a book about neuroscience. It is a profound meditation on what it means to be human……. What makes Our Brains, Our Selves truly remarkable is Husain’s willingness to delve into uncomfortable social truths. His reflections on belonging are particularly incisive.’ - Sri Lankan Guardian

‘[A] funny, fascinating book … Above all, the book is a reminder of how mysterious the workings of the human brain are [and] builds a powerful case for supporting people whose brains have become unruly, rather than isolating them.’ - Daily Mail
